Privacy Policy

Last updated October 16, 2026

Elective is built to be privacy-first: your positions are private, we never sell personal data, and the app never acts on your behalf without an explicit tap. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.

Information you provide

  • Account: your email address (for passwordless sign-in, or the address Google or Apple shares if you sign in with them), a display name and avatar, and, only if you add them in Settings, your legal name and birth year. We don't use your birth year for anything today.
  • Home address: your street address, city, state, ZIP code, and county. We store it on your account, along with the congressional and state-legislative districts it falls in, to match your representatives and the elections on your ballot. To find those districts, the address is sent to the U.S. Census Bureau's geocoder. We don't track your location.
  • Your activity: positions (Support/Oppose), tracked bills, followed representatives, saved elections, notification settings, and any Pro notes/tags and topic interests you set. These are private to your account.
  • Positions you send to your representatives: when you use Tell your reps, we keep a record of what you sent and to which offices, along with the sender details shown on the message (your name, email, and home address). The message goes only to your own representatives' offices: you send it through their official contact forms, or, once we're approved, we deliver it for you through Congress's official messaging systems.
  • Feedback: when you use Send feedback, we keep your message, the kind you picked (feedback, bug, or idea), the page you were on, and your browser type, linked to your account so we can follow up. A copy goes to our team's review board in Notion, without your name or email. Deleting your account deletes both.
  • Billing: if you subscribe to Pro, your plan status and a Stripe customer ID. Stripe handles your card details; we never see or store your card number.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage analytics that are anonymous and cookieless: they're tied to a random device ID, not to your account, and never record your positions. You can turn them off in Settings → Privacy.
  • Your IP address, used briefly to limit abuse (rate limiting).
  • Error diagnostics to keep the app working.
  • If you enable notifications, a push subscription token for your device.

How we use it

To run the app: match your representatives, assemble your daily briefing, personalize your feed, save what you track, and, for Pro members, send alerts and generate AI explanations. We do not use your positions to target advertising, and we do not sell personal data.

Service providers

We share data only with providers that help us operate, under their own terms:

  • Supabase: database, authentication, and file storage.
  • Vercel: hosting, plus cookieless analytics and performance monitoring.
  • PostHog: anonymous usage analytics.
  • U.S. Census Bureau: finding the districts for your address.
  • Anthropic: generating on-demand AI bill explanations for Pro members. It receives the bill's public text and any question you type, not your identity.
  • Stripe: payment processing and billing for Pro, as merchant of record.
  • Sentry: error monitoring.
  • Notion: our team's workspace, where we review the feedback you send (without your name or email).
  • Upstash: rate limiting, using IP addresses.
  • Cloudflare: a bot check before we deliver a message to Congress for you.
  • Google and Apple: sign-in, if you choose to sign in with them.
  • Your browser's push service (from Apple, Google, or Mozilla): delivering notifications, if you turn them on.

Your choices & rights

  • Export your data or delete your account anytime from Settings → Data & permissions.
  • Turn analytics and address-based personalization on or off in Settings → Privacy.
  • Manage or disable notifications in Settings → Notifications.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your data; email support@elective.app and we'll help.

Retention & children

We keep your data while your account is active; deleting your account removes your personal data from our systems. Stripe keeps payment records for as long as the law requires. Elective is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes & contact

We'll post material changes here with a new date. Questions or requests: support@elective.app.
